2011 Christmas Function

At the November meeting it was decided that the club should hold a Christmas function, however the million dollar question was WHERE ??

A few options were thrown about, and the decision was to put it to the entire membership in the form of an online poll to decide.

Given that we need to have a decision prior to booking a venue if required, the poll will be open until Monday 28th November.

Working Bee

The club will be conducting a working bee at the clubrooms on Sunday, 13th November starting around 14:00.

The aim of this working bee wil be to analyse and repair the antennas and feeds on the tower, so that they are in working order for the upcoming contests planned to be entered from the club station at the end of November.

Please let Greg VK8GM know if you can attend, as we need to have enough helpers for safety reasons, as well as to ensure that the required work can be completed in time, since we will need to have the fire alarms de-activated for access to the roof spaces above the clubrooms.

WIA News now on 2m repeater

The weekly VK1WIA National News can now be heard on Sunday mornings from 10am on the clubs 2m repeater.

A 10 and 5 minute reminder will be played prior to the broadcast commencing.
During the news broadcast itself, the IRLP node will be disabled, and to ensure the repeater doesn't time out, there is a brief de-key/re-key sequence built in at regular intervals.

I.R.L.P. Hardware Updates

Peter VK2YX and Geoff VK8GG rebuilt IRLP node 6000 on Sunday the 5th June 2011, moving it onto newer hardware (well, newer than what it was on) and a very much updated operating system.

The rebuild went well and the 'new' node is available for use via the 2m repeater.

If anyone notices any issues with the audio levels can you please let us know, as there still may be some minor tweaking required.

Tri Band H.F. Yagi Operational

On Sunday the 5th June 2011, a small group of local Amateurs worked to get the tri-band yagi H.F. antenna on top of the club tower.
The end result after a few challenges was outright success - the yagi was installed, rotator cable connected and tests conducted.
I'm pleased to announce the full operation of H.F. activities at the club in which we can work some decent DX with a suitable antenna.
Thanks to Greg VK8GM, Phil VK8FHIL and Kaz VK8ZKZ for their huge physical efforts.

IRLP now on 2m repeater

IRLP node 6000 was switched over to our 2m repeater this evening, and some initial tests performed. It does seem that there may be a minor issue with some apparent dropouts when the node is transmitting, which from our basic tests so far could be caused by the CTCSS tone being transmitted by the node being slightly off frequency, causing the repeater to intermittently lose the input signal for a fraction of a second. Other than this minor issue everything seems fine, and the node is open for business.

At this stage the node has not been configured to perform any broadcasts or join any nets - we'll probably leave this until after the minor issue detailed above has been resolved.

Please remember to follow the basic IRLP usage guidelines, but most of all, HAVE FUN!

Tower extension at clubrooms

group of members installed a new section on top of our current tower at the club rooms and mounted new guy attachment points on the roof due to the new height of the tower. We had the following work group complete this task:
- Greg VK8GM, Kaz VK8ZKZ, Graham VK8GH, Phil VK8FHIL and Bruce VK8MC

I was somewhat surprised the section went up the Gin-Pole rather well and was finally guyed off yesterday at about 6:30pm when it was getting dark and we basically had to ‘down-tools’ for the day. You will see the details in the photos in the club photo album taken this afternoon after working with Greg to complete the remaining tasks of rotator and extension pole attachment. Man, the tower is high now!
